Social Action Committee

The Social Action Committee reaches out to the community in the spirit of tikkun olam, repairing the world. Annual events include the Migrant Workers’ Lunch, Mitzvah Day to encourage volunteerism in the community, and a Habitat for Humanity fundraiser. A food collection drive is also conducted each year, with about 1,000 pounds of food donated to the Lord Fairfax Food Bank.

In addition, the synagogue provides volunteers to replace the regular volunteers at the Winchester Medical Center on Christmas Day.  This project was featured in an article in a December 2005 Winchester Star article, "Jewish Congregation Fills Volunteer Gaps at Hospital."  The article explains: "Beth El Congregation's Operation Snowflake has nothing to do with the white precipitation that falls from the sky.  It has to do with people of one faith reaching out to people of another.  Beginning at 9 am on Christmas day and continuing until 6 pm, Beth El volunteers will work two-hour shifts in pairs. They will work at the information desk, deliver flowers and gifts to patients, and assist with patient discharges."

Mitzvah Gardeners
Within the Social Action Committee is a sub-group called the Mitzvah Gardeners.  Thanks to them, beautiful flowers surround our Temple.  If you would like to volunteer to add your green thumb, please call the office.
