We hold services every Friday night and on Jewish holidays. Here are just a few examples of how we try to meet different needs:
One Friday a month at 6:30 p.m., we have a family service that is led by one of the religious school classes. This gives all our children a sense of familiarity and comfort with such synagogue ritual as opening the closing the ark, as well as undressing and dressing the Torah. At that service, the Rabbi tells a story instead of giving a sermon and invites all birthday celebrants for the month – both adults and children – to come up on the bimah for a birthday blessing.
On another Friday evening, our well-liked alternative music group leads us in an 8:00 p.m. service that is primarily song, accompanied by piano, guitar, and drums. Many congregants find this service particularly uplifting.
Tot Shabbat: A monthly 30-minute interactive service geared to families with youngsters six and under. With child-friendly songs, movement activities, and a story, our youngest members and their parents have the opportunity to celebrate Shabbat in an informal, upbeat way. A kid-oriented oneg will follow.
